The beach of La Mata gains an extra 4 metres in width with the new promenade

Juan Carlos Moragues, the central government delegate in the Comunidad Valenciana, visited La Mata in the municipality of Torrevieja to see for himself the result of the repairs and regeneration work which has been carried out since the heavy storms and flooding of December and March.

This work has consisted at the beach of La Mata primarily of the reconstruction of the 260-metre seafront promenade at a cost of 650,000 euros, with efforts having been made to prevent a re-occurrence of the washing away of the sand which has coincided with episodes of heavy rain for the last three years. This has been achieved by eliminating the previous wooden structure completely and instead constructing a concrete retaining wall, and as a side-effect the beach has effectively been made 4 metres wider.

In other words, there are now approximately 1,000 square metres of “extra” beach in La Mata as a result of the repair work funded by the central government.

Sr Moragues also explained the plans to dedicate 350,000 euros to the restoration of the Torre del Embarcadero, and was at pains to point out that in total the national government has spent almost 4.7 million euros on repairing last winter’s storm damage at the beaches of the province of Alicante, the highest figure for any province. Other municipalities to benefit from this aid in the Costa Blanca include those of El Campello, Benidorm, Denia, Benissa, Teulada, Altea, Pilar de la Horadada, Jávea, Orihuela and Guardamar del Segura.
